Tooth arrival chart

Babies are usually born with 20 baby teeth. They start to come through the gums at about 9 months, but you may see their first teeth by 3 months or as late as 12 months.

All 20 baby teeth will usually appear by 3 years of age. Permanent teeth will start replacing the baby teeth at around 6 years of age.

  • 6-12 Months – baby teeth: 4
  • 9-16 Months – baby teeth: 6
  • 13-19 Months – baby teeth: 12
  • 16-23 Months – baby teeth: 16
  • 23-33 months – baby teeth: 20

Tips to care for baby’s first teeth:

  • Baby teeth need daily care — Start brushing when your baby gets their first tooth.
  • Use low fluoride toothpaste only from 18 months of age.
  • Introduce drinking from a cup at around 6 months of age.
  • Put your baby to bed without a bottle — stop the bottle at around 12 months of age.
  • Book your baby’s first visit to the dentist when their first tooth appears, or at around 12 months — whichever comes first.
